City's climate change resilience discussed by councillors
A new report setting out plans to explore options to upgrading Leeds’ climate change resilience was discussed by councillors recently with the meeting taking place a week after the city reached record high temperatures. Councillors supported plans to hold a series of workshops to explore how to better prevent, protect, and prepare for the increasing risk of extreme and prolonged heat, flooding and drought in Leeds.

Active travel ambassador gives seal of approval for new East Leeds cycle route
Double Olympic champion and Leeds local Alistair Brownlee accompanied councillors and local school pupils to try out new cycling infrastructure installed as part of the East Leeds Orbital Route. The scheme includes 14km of dedicated cycleways, pedestrian and equestrian pathways, and new access points to make it easier to walk or cycle to and between surrounding areas. A new 9.8 hectare country park provides green recreational space for local residents, while trees and plants along the ELOR route will improve drainage, support local wildlife, and improve the look and feel of the route.

First tenants welcomed to new, low carbon council homes
Leeds City Council has handed over the keys to new residents of a brand-new council housing development as part of the local authority’s commitment to build 1,500 new council homes by 2025. The new buildings have been designed to help tenants save on energy (and cut their carbon footprint) thanks to plenty of insulation, low energy lighting, solar panels, efficient hot water systems and ground source heat pumps. The average council property is already more efficient (and therefore cheaper to power and heat) than the typical Leeds home.
